What is it that you desire most in life? Is it beauty, fame, money, attention, success, acquiring possessions, intimacy, your sin(s) of choice (and we all have them!), marriage, restoration in a relationship, a new car, a nice home, shopping at expensive stores, the "freedom" to do whatever you want?
There really are so many distractions and idols in life that vow for our attention and seek to take our eyes off of the Lord, as they promise true freedom and pleasure, all the while, too often failing to live up to what they have promised! Isn't it fascinating that what we spend our lives trying to achieve (acceptance, joy, freedom, a joy toward life, the will to live, and a healthy perspective) can only truly be found in a real relationship with God, a daily commitment to Him through the salvation Jesus Christ accomplished on behalf of sinners, and growing in that commitment daily as we seek after the Lord and live our entire lives for Him?
I believe so often, we want the easy way out or a quick fix to whatever problem, issue, or circumstance is going on in our lives at the moment. Yet what we are failing to realize (and rejoice in) is that God cares for us so deeply that when we come to know Him through His precious Son, Jesus Christ, He builds our character and trust in Him through the very things we wish He would immediately remove from our lives.
Christianity really is a refining process of purging, sanctifying, and delivering us from that which vows to take God's place in our hearts. Surely, all that will matter on the day we all stand before God is if we knew God truly and completely and spent each and every day of our lives for His glory, honor, and praise...not our own glory, not the approval of others, and not even what we owned or who we knew.
All that will matter one hundred years from now is if we knew the Lord.
