How important it is!

As Christians, we are to guard our hearts (Proverbs 4: 23), renew our minds (Romans 12: 2), walk in repentance, fear, trust, and obey God (Deuteronomy 13: 4, Proverbs 3: 5-6) and grow in the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5: 22-23).  Just like an athlete would not wear ten pound weights as he is running in a marathon because it would impede his progress, so we too, as believers and followers of Jesus Christ through God's salvation, MUST be careful what we fill our minds with, dwell on, dream (or fantasize) about, who we spend time with, the conversations we have, and even books/articles/magazines we read so that these things do not hinder our progress or keep us from moving forward in godliness.  There is so much in the world around us that tries to steal our attention and draw us away from staying focused on God.

So often we question, "How close can I get to sin without actually sinning?" and yet fail to realize that this in itself is a sinful and selfish thought where we try to receive the pleasures of sin by drawing as close to it as possible without fully giving in.  The best example I can think of is a man walking toward a cliff.  All would agree that it would be a foolish response and an odd one at that if he played around with the thought of, "How close can I get to the edge of the cliff without actually falling to my death?"  This would be absurd because simple pondering of the statement really drives the point home and makes you realize that similarly, trying to get as close as possible to sin without actually sinning is just as foolish, odd, and ludacris!

God is a faithful God who is able to transform our lives, purify our hearts, purge, refine, and sanctify us...yet we must take the necessary steps toward purity.  This may include changing our entertainment choices, places we go, people we spend time with, the music we listen to, books we read, or web sites we visit.

Remember the quote, "Garbage in, garbage out."
